MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Former Barry University women’s tennis player Akemi Maehama was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year. She received a $7,500 award.

“I cannot think of a better way to thank everyone who helped me through my college years, my coaches, staff, faculty, friends, family,” Maehama said. “This award is really meaningful to me. It helps me boost my confidence in my graduate classes. Not everyone receives this award, so I want to put forth my maximum effort to move towards my dream.”

Maehama, who completed her eligibility in the spring by helping the No. 1-ranked Buccaneers win the NCAA Division II National Championship. She finished her career as Barry’s all-time singles leader in winning percentage at .940. Maehama went 47-3 in her four years with the Bucs, having been a part of a national championship team as a freshman.

She will use the scholarship to pursue a master’s in sport management at Barry, while potentially exploring a dual degree in business administration. She completed her undergrad studies in May, receiving a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a 3.91 grade point average.

Maehama is one of 29 student-athletes nationwide among the NCAA’s three divisions, including five women’s tennis players awarded the scholarship.

“First of all, I cannot believe that I was chosen,” Maehama said. “I just do whatever I have to make things better for myself and other people. If you are a positive person, you attract positive energy.”
