DAVIE, Fla. – Barry women’s basketball team secured its first win of the season Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers defeated Shorter University, 68-56, at the NSU Tip-off Classic at the Taft University Center.

Playing at Nova Southeastern in the opening game of the NSU Tip-off Classic, the Bucs dominated the second half after entering the intermission in a 30-30 tie. Barry built a healthy lead from the opening minutes of the second half as it converted twice as many field goals and three times the number of 3-pointers than Shorter.

Nyjah Porcher and Jackie Perez shared top scoring honors for the Bucs as both had 17 points. Porcher also had a team-high six assists to round out a notable opening game for the senior guard from New Britain, Conn. Perez was 5 of 5 from three-point range.

Newcomer Irene Sanchez, a 6-foot forward from Barcelona, Spain, had 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Division I transfer Kim Flournoy, a San Diego native who spent her first two years at Seattle, finished with 12 points and six boards in her Bucs debut.

Up next for the Buccaneers is their first home game of the season when they face Alabama-Huntsville at the HSC Gymnasium Saturday at 4 p.m.
