Barry University is now smoke free

Per the email announcement sent by Barry University President Sr. Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD, on February 4, the University – in order to maintain a healthy and safe environment – will become a smoke-free institution effective July 1.

This means that smoking of any kind (including e-cigarettes) will not be permitted anywhere on Barry owned or operated facilities. This policy applies to all Barry University students, faculty, staff, visitors and anyone else who is on a Barry campus or facility.

The Student Government Association originally spearheaded this public health initiative, which was then approved by Sister Linda and the ECA. To view the official policy, please visit the HR web site or Student Health Services web site.

To assist employees and students in quitting, the University will provide access for faculty, staff, and students interested in cessation services, including but not limited to nicotine replacement therapy; individual, group, telephone and online counseling throughour partnership with the Miami Dade Area Health Education Center. For more information, visit tobaccofreeflorida.com or contact Student Health Services.

Initial compliance will be peer enforced and depends upon the courtesy and cooperation of all members of the community. Through this public health initiative, we can all breathe cleaner air and enjoy a healthier campus.
