Support Haiti in the Wake of Hurricane Matthew

Support Haiti in the Wake of Hurricane Matthew

Why help Haiti?

The death toll in the southwest of Haiti has climbed past 1000 people since the storm hit last week. Crops and livestock have been wiped away. Rates of cholera have already increased in areas where flooding occurred, and there is additional concern that cholera will continue to spread throughout the country.

Hurricane Matthew’s Impact on Haiti’s Northwest Region

The Northwest Department (also known as the Diocese of Port-de-Paix), is the poorest region in Haiti, and one of its most inaccessible. Hurricane Matthew brought devastating winds and rains to the Diocese on October 4, as the storm passed directly between the easternmost region of Cuba and the northwest peninsula of Haiti.

Due to its isolation and lack of infrastructure, the area has received little to no media coverage nor international aid.

Barry will support the communities of Northwest Haiti through its long-term partnership with Amor En Acción, the organization that has fostered the Archdiocese of Miami’s 40-year sister-diocese relationship with the Diocese of Port-de-Paix.

Monetary donations made to Amor En Acción will directly benefit families in the Diocese of Port-de-Paix through provisions of basic food staples, rebuilding supplies, sanitation materials, and replanting and agricultural supplies.
