Barry University is a Smoke-Free campus; help us keep it clean

Barry University became a Smoke-Free campus on July 1 and we appreciate everyone’s support with this “Share Clean Air” health initiative. Smoking cessation programs are available to any faculty, staff or student who would like to stop smoking through the Area Health Education Center (AHEC). If you would like more information, please contact Student Health Services or Human Resources.

As we move into our fifth month with this initiative, we’d like to encourage those who choose to smoke outside of campus to please be considerate of people entering the campus and not to litter. Barry University does respect an individual’s right to smoke as long as it is not on campus. Although smoking outside the gates of the University may be within the letter of the policy, one must ask if it is within the spirit of the policy, especially when individuals smoke directly in front of the Smoke-Free banner and leave their cigarette butts on the ground.

Our Facilities department is responsible for the beautification of our campus and they are being forced daily to clean up piles of cigarette butts outside of the gates. Contrary to popular belief, cigarette butts are NOT biodegradable. Cigarette butt waste is a huge environmental issue and leaving cigarettes butts on the ground is littering.

Again, if you choose to smoke outside the gates, please demonstrate courtesy and “Pick up Your Butts!” Help us maintain a healthy and beautiful Barry University campus.
