CNHS professors awarded funding from the American College of Cardiology for first of its kind research

Two professors from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences have been awarded funding from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in Washington, D.C.

Associate Professor Peggy Newsham Beckley, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, and Professor and Program Director Belkis Landa-Gonzalez, EdD, OTR/L, FAOTA, will use the funding to collaborate on a grant related to heart failure education and intervention. The research is expected to last a year-and-a-half.

Beckley and Landa-Gonzalez, along with two Barry post-professional OTD students, will work in association with CardioSmart of ACC and Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) to improve self-care and health management skills of clients with heart failure.

The program expects to reach 500 clients in 10 centers throughout the United States who have experienced heart failure. This will be the first clinical research program of its kind at ACC that includes occupational therapists to deliver education and intervention as a support to improve outcomes for people with heart failure.
