Doctoral students in The Bahamas spearhead service learning project for high school students in Nassau

Students in Nassau enrolled in Barry University’s Adrian Dominican School of Education’s (ADSOE) EdD in Organizational Learning & Leadership degree taking the HED-713 class — Teaching & Learning at the University Level — decided to do a service-learning project as part of their coursework. The project consisted of creating an event for local high students that would be comprised of college preparation workshops and mentoring local high school students.

The doctoral students in the Nassau BC cohort worked all semester to organize the event. Using their connections to the local community, they enlisted the assistance of guidance counselors at local high schools to invite their students to the event.

They applied for and received a grant of $2,500 from the Ministry of Education to go toward supplies for the event. Remaining funds will be used for future events taking place in the Family Islands.

The students who created this event hope the project can be carried on by future Barry University graduate cohorts in The Bahamas.
