Clinical Biology Program Awarded ASCP Foundation Grant

ASCP Foundation Laboratory Science Program Director Educational Grant is a mini grant opportunity for program directors of NAACLS accredited institutions to receive funding for their educational program. The Clinical Biology Program at Barry University submitted an application titled “IHC Panel Approach for Student Engagement” and was awarded $2,500 for use in their Histotechnology Program.

The funds will go to purchase antibodies for immunohistochemical staining methods to detect specific proteins in histological tissue samples. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the future of Histopathology diagnostic testing, and when combined with multiple IHC stains can help determine the pathology and treatment options of a specimen.

The grant will fund a panel approach, in that students will be able to identify through multiple IHC staining proteins and origins of tumors, and understand which stains will further help determine the nature of the pathology. IHC staining via a panel approach narrows down the specific disease and can be a tremendous help in diagnosing. Students will learn the skills and antibodies related to IHC staining, which is becoming a common practice in pathology labs, which will encourage critical thinking and hopefully strengthen students’ knowledge for the board exam.
