Sport and Exercise Sciences Program Represented at 15th Annual International Conference in Greece

The work of Zacharias Papadakis, Ph.D., assistant professor of sport and exercise sciences, and his research team was well represented at the 15th Annual International Conference on Sport and Exercise Science in Athens, Greece, this summer.

Dr. Papadakis’ research team conducted a study examining the moderating effects of sleep quality and physical activity on mental toughness. The research team included undergraduate Barry students led by Courtnie Moodie and Alexander Anderson, graduate students from Barry’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Biomedical Sciences program, and Andreas Stamatis, Ph.D., from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Dr. Stamatis presented preliminary results at the conference.

The research study is ongoing, and Dr. Papadakis and his team are actively seeking more participants, including members of the Barry University community, to help them understand the effects of sleep quality and physical activity on mental toughness. The research study is being conducted in the Human Performance Laboratory at Barry University’s main campus in Miami as well as the College of Nursing and Health Sciences location in Hollywood, Florida. Final results will be prepared for peer-reviewed publication.

The research team is thankful to Dr. Stamatis for traveling to Greece to present their accomplishments. Dr. Papadakis looks to launch a Sport and Exercise Sciences Study Abroad Program next year and have his students present their achievements in person.

The annual International Conference on Sport and Exercise Sciences is organized by the Panhellenic Association of Sports Economists and Managers (PASEM) and the Sport, Exercise, and Kinesiology Unit of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER).

ATINER was established in 1995 as an independent, world member-based association of academics and researchers. The organization chose Athens as the meeting place because of its history and culture. ATINER’s mission is to provide a forum where academics and researchers from all over the world can meet to exchange ideas on their research and discuss the future developments in their disciplines.
