Barry University Celebrates the Opening of the Adrian Dominican Institute for Mission and Leadership and the Dedication of Bevilacqua Hall

(MIAMI, FL) Today, Barry University President Dr. Mike Allen, Board Chair John Bussel, Sister Patricia Siemen, OP, JD, Prioress of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, and members of the Barry community gathered to honor Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, Ph.D. and celebrate the opening of the Adrian Dominican Institute for Mission and Leadership on Barry’s Miami Shores Campus.

An alumna, President Emerita, and now founding director of the Institute, Sister Linda will guide the Institute to cultivate and sustain the mission and heritage of Barry’s sponsors, the Adrian Dominican Sisters, for future generations.

“I am deeply humbled and honored by the creation of the Institute. With the engagement of students, faculty, and staff, we will work diligently to strengthen the infusion of the University’s Core Commitments- Knowledge and Truth, Inclusive Community, Social Justice, and Collaborative Service- into all aspects of the University’s life,” said Sister Linda.

Supported by three lead gifts from The Adrian Dominican Sisters, the Shepard Broad Foundation and the Garner Foundation, the Adrian Dominican Institute for Mission and Leadership will preserve the legacy of Barry’s founding congregation and religious sponsors through efforts such as workshops, lectures and special events that promote mission-centered learning, the creation of a resource library, and collaboration with other Adrian Dominican sponsored institutions.

At the ribbon cutting, Barry University President Dr. Mike Allen said, “At Barry’s dedication in 1941 Archbishop Amletto Giovanni Cicognani noted that this institution is the result of the ‘daring undertaking of courageous Sisters.’ The Institute will be the steward of that tradition and help ensure that courageous spirit remains on display.”

At the same event, the University officially dedicated Bevilacqua Hall in Sister Linda’s honor. The residence hall was constructed during her 15-year tenure as President. Board Chair John Bussel presented Sister Linda with a framed photo of the hall now bearing her name as well as a photobook commemorating her time as Barry University President.
