About the Program Occupational Therapy (OTD)

Barry University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers a post-professional practice doctorate degree in occupational therapy. This flexible, distance-delivered program is designed for NBCOT certified occupational therapists who wish to advance their education beyond the master’s level.

Applicants may submit a reflective portfolio for evaluation to receive up to 6 credits for work experience in areas of leadership, research, or advanced practice.

The Occupational Therapy Program is committed to transformative education of adult learners through non-traditional lifelong learning experiences. We recognize the value of life and professional experiences and offer certified occupational therapy clinicians the opportunity to submit a reflective portfolio evidencing validation of their acquired knowledge and skills in the program’s educational outcomes. 

The portfolio must be submitted at the time of admission and may be focused on one or more of the following areas: leadership, research or specialized/ advanced practice. Students may earn up to 6 credits towards their doctorate degree in occupational therapy based on the portfolio review. A Portfolio review fee applies. OTD Program FAQs

  • No, GRE is not required for admission.

  • The Post-professional OTD has 2 tracks. The Core Courses (18 credits) and the Advanced Track (18 credits). The first must be completed before the Advanced Track which includes a Capstone or Graduate project. Some examples of the courses in the Core sequence include: Theories in OT, Leadership and Advocacy, & Advanced Clinical research. Some of the courses in the Advanced sequence include: Management of Pain; Psychosocial issues with Aging, technology for Teaching, etc. You can select elective courses in your area of interest.

  • Graduate programs are primarily financed with student loans. The College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers some scholarships on a competitive basis for accepted students. The University also offers some merit based scholarships. AOTA/AOTF also offers scholarships for students in OT programs (www.AOTA.org and www.AOTF.org). Some of our students have been recipients of such. Some of our students have also received loan forgiveness from various organizations.

  • Effective the Spring term 2020, the 36 credits program has a competitive tuition rate of $24,000 with a monthly payment option available. Students are required to register for 6 credits each semester.

With small class sizes, there is a considerable amount of personalized attention from your faculty and opportunities to build strong relationships with fellow classmates.

The Doctorate in Occupational Therapy Program uses a rolling admissions process with deadlines as follows: March 1st to start in the Summer term, June 1st to start in the Fall and November 1st to start in the Spring term.

The minimum enrollment for this program is 7 students. If the enrollment number is not met, applicants will be placed on a wait-list and notified.
