April is Occupational Therapy Month

Occupational therapists are rehabilitation professionals who have a holistic perspective aiming to help individuals across the lifespan develop or improve the skills they need to participate in their everyday activities or occupations. Occupational therapists work with clients to promote health and wellness, teach new skills to those that have an acquired injury or live with a physical, cognitive or mental disability, educate on lifestyle and environmental modifications to the home, workplace, or other environments for adaptability and improved function.

Occupational therapists assist disabled and healthy individuals achieve their personal goals and maximize their level of independence and participation in valued occupations.
Occupational therapists work in many settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, private practice, industry and the community. Services typically include individualized evaluations, customized interventions, consultation and outcome evaluation to determine progress.

Occupational Therapy is a rewarding career in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, predicts an increased demand of 29 percent from 2012- 2022 (BLS, 2011).
