Checking IDs at Staffed Gates and Wearing IDs on Campus

To continue improving the safety and security on campus, we have implemented a new practice at each of the staffed entry gates for vehicles and individuals entering the main campus. In response to feedback from University community members, Public Safety Officers at each of the staffed access gates are asking Barry community members to show a University ID upon entering campus. Non-Barry community members entering at staffed locations in vehicles or on foot as guests will be greeted by our Public Safety Officers and asked to state the purpose of their visit and show a valid form of identification. Once authorized to enter, the Officers then records the name(s), documents the vehicle make, model, license plate, if applicable, and provides any necessary directions/information.

We strongly encourage all members of the Barry University community to wear their University ID at all times while on campus. Faculty, staff and students are expected to carry their Barry University ID at all times to gain access to residence halls, dining hall, fitness center and other school functions. Visibly showing your University ID along with access control at staffed gates and video surveillance can help provide a security package to protect our students, faculty and staff. Wearing identification has become a security “best practice” for schools, colleges and universities across the country and demonstrates community readiness in the event of a serious breach of security or tragedy.

These action items are being initiated as part of a larger all-hazards vulnerability assessment we began several years ago to address potential vulnerabilities. By providing access control at staffed entranced gates and asking University members to wear their University ID, further strengthens our efforts to mitigate security vulnerabilities on campus. When your ID badge is present, everyone knows at a glance who belongs and who does not. Your ID should be easily seen and presented to any Barry University member or person of authority seeking identification. This can be especially important for emergency personnel who may not be as familiar with our community.

IDs can be worn on a breakaway lanyard hanging from the neck, or clipped to your clothing with a plastic case. Lanyards or plastic cases are easily available at no cost at the Landon Concierge Desk.
