Barry alumnus presents research at prestigious conference

Barry University alumnus Edgar Sy presented his poster “CT Scan Necessary for Ankle Fracture Surgical Management and Post-Operative Care” at the annual American Colleges of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) Conference May 2021 in Las Vegas. Sy graduated with a degree in Podiatric Medicine from Barry in 2019 and is a second-year Podiatric Resident and Chief Resident of Podiatry Department at Jackson North Medical Center in Miami, Florida. His coauthor is his mentor, Barry Professor and Residency Director Jacqueline Brill, DPM.

Sy works closely with Dr. Brill and Luis Rodriguez, DPM, at Jackson North in clinic and surgical trauma experience, which inspired Sy’s interest in foot and ankle trauma management. He conducted a scientific abstract regarding the necessity of computed tomography (CT) scans for high- and low-energy ankle fracture to enhance surgical fixation management and overall patient satisfaction.

ACFAS accepted Sy’s abstract for the yearly conference, which typically draws the most attendance in all national foot and ankle conferences. Sy presented his research in the conference Exhibit Hall all week, answering questions and offering his take on surgical management to other physicians on a national level.

Sy is from Orange County, California, where he graduated from California State University in Exercise Science with Strength and Conditioning, then graduated from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2019. During his time at Barry, he served as class Vice President and earned numerous awards, including FPMA Past President’s Award, Excellence in Clinical Science Award, Dr. Raymond Ibañez Memorial Award and the Most Inspirational Award, which was voted on by his class.

He was accepted to his No. 1 residency selection at Jackson North Medical Center in Miami, Florida, where he works closely with Barry University Podiatric Medicine students and was awarded Resident of the Year. Sy will serve as Chief Resident this year under Dr. Brill.
