Podiatry students attend annual Science and Management Symposium

This year at the annual Science and Management (SAM) Symposium in Orlando, more than 40 students from Barry’s School of Podiatric Medicine attended lectures presented by DPMs representing many areas of expertise.

During the annual Florida Podiatric Medical Association (FPMA) meeting, second year Barry podiatry student Vanisaben Patel addressed FPMA’s board of directors regarding the academic and professional activities that Barry University podiatry students are currently engaged in. Patel spoke about volunteer events in which student are engaged, such as clinics for those who are homeless and for Special Olympics athletes. She also spoke about the success of Barry students inside and outside the classroom.

During the meeting, FPMA’s board of directors addressed various aspects of the field of podiatry, such as the continuing efforts by Congress relating to the VA bill and the equity law, malpractice issues, and new research in the field of podiatric medicine. The assembled attendees welcomed more than 100 new members to the FPMA as well as the Barry students who attended the conference. The current vice president of FPMA, Dr. Andrew Belis, spoke highly of Barry students and the initiative they are showing. Also addressed was how members of FPMA can help further the success of podiatry students in Florida, including reaching out to the university and having an open-door policy to students who want to shadow a podiatrist or get hands-on experience in the operating room.

Barry podiatry students in attendance expressed deep satisfaction with their experience at SAM and were very appreciative of the opportunity to attend.
