Barry Volunteers Turn Out for MLK Day of Service Projects in Miami-Dade County

Students reflect on King’s hope for a “beloved community”

Dozens of Barry volunteers celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. earlier this month by participating in a Day of Service in Miami-DadeCounty neighborhoods near campus.

Ahead of the King holiday, the volunteers rendered service with Urban GreenWorks at Cerasee Farm in Liberty City and with an organization named Sharing One Love in north-eastern Miami-Dade.

At Cerasee Farm, they assisted with various property maintenance tasks as part of Urban GreenWorks’ efforts aimed at “restoring the economic, physical, and social health of underserved communities.”

Sharing One Love is a resource hub for anti-human trafficking organizations. Volunteers spoke with business owners and store managers in MiamiShores and North Miami, sharing facts on human trafficking and its traumatic impact. The volunteers also showed photos of the faces of individuals suspected of being trafficked.

Students spent time reflecting on the day’s theme of “Chaos or Community?” based on a 1967 book with that subtitle.

In Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? King reflected on the Civil Rights Movement, noted Kaitlyn Gallaghar, a CCSI-based AmeriCorps VISTA member.

“Dr. King wrote about his hope for the future, but also his worries that people were beginning to sway from the path to his vision of a 'beloved community' – a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love of one's fellow human beings,” Gallaghar said. “Participants in the Day of Service were asked to consider what action needs to take place to address social justice issues in today's society and to create a beloved community.”

Barry’s annual MLK Day of Service is the Saturday immediately preceding the federal holiday – the third Monday of January. Nearly 70 volunteers turned out for this year’s Day of Service facilitated by Barry’s AmeriCorps VISTA members, including Faith Acfalle and Jaedyn Amaro (Office of Mission Engagement) and Danny Arzu (CCSI).

Local Organization Recognizes Dr. Glenn Bowen for Outstanding

Partnership Support

The Haitian Youth and Community Center of Florida, Inc. (HYCCF) has recognized Dr. Glenn Bowen, executive director of Barry’s Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI), for promoting and supporting university partnerships with the community.

Roseline Philippe, chair of the board of directors, presented a plaque to Bowen during an HYCCF event at Florida InternationalUniversity’s KovensConference Center in North Miami recently.

Philippe praised Bowen’s leadership of Barry’s service-learning program, which has benefited children served by the nonprofit organization.

Dr. Pamela Hall, an associate professor of psychology, described Bowen’s work and accomplishments in glowing terms. Hall highlighted her colleague’s faculty development initiatives, which, she said, have advanced community-engaged scholarship.

HYCCF Executive Director Nadie Mondestin thanked Bowen for his “outstanding support” of her organization.

In accepting the “Award of Appreciation,” Bowen affirmed Barry University’s commitment to sustained engagement with organizations in the wider community, especially those serving marginalized population groups.

Alumna Dominique McMillan Credits Barry for Her Commitment to

Food-Waste Reduction

Barry alumna Dominique McMillan is currently featured in the Food Recovery Network (FRN) "Alumni Spotlight." In the feature, she credits her alma mater for her commitment to food-waste reduction.

Now a program and outreach fellow at the College Park, Maryland-based FRN, McMillan was the student leader who initiated Barry’s participation in food recovery efforts. She is credited with being a co-founder of the Barry FRN chapter, which became a member of the national network in June 2018.

A former Barry Service Corps Fellow, McMillan joined the FRN Student and Alumni Advisory Board in the fall of 2019 and has remained passionate about the food recovery movement.

In the January 7 piece, McMillan is quoted as saying, “I see the movement growing outside of food recovery. [That's when] we get to the next step of doing education for consumers. And we get there by being advocates [and] well-rounded citizens that promote a greener, [more] sustainable future that is based on equity, honesty, and the common good."
