Assistant Athletic Director Receives Award for Service

Amanda Knight, assistant director of athletics, is this year’s recipient of a Community Service Award from the Center for Community Service Initiatives. This award is in recognition of Knight’s effective coordination and tracking of the community service activities of Barry student-athletes.

“Thanks in large part to such coordination, Barry has gained national recognition for the number of service hours completed by our student-athletes,” said CCSI Executive Director Dr. Glenn Bowen, who presented a plaque to Knight at the university’s fourth annual Community Engagement Awards.

Deadline for Civic Program Applications Extended to Friday

The application deadline for the 2017–2018 Barry Service Corps Fellows cohort has been extended to Friday, May 5. The Center for Community Service Initiatives is accepting applications from undergraduates interested in developing their civic knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The BSC Fellows Program is a civic learning and leadership initiative of the CCSI. Designed to foster civic-mindedness in undergraduates, the program has four major components: (1) Training and development sessions, (2) collaboration with community partners, (3) support of CCSI programs and events, and (4) design, implementation, and assessment of social justice-focused projects.

Candidates for the program must be in good academic standing with the university, graduate no earlier than May 2018, participate in a weeklong orientation (August 14–19), and attend meetings on Friday afternoons throughout the academic year. The time commitment for this program is approximately 7 hours a week.

Interested students may pick up an application form from the CCSI – Adrian 208 – or email Courtney Berrien, CCSI associate director, at cberrien@barry.edu or 305-899-4017.

Staff, Faculty, and Students Urged to Support Box Tops Drive

Staff, faculty, and students are urged to support the Box Tops for Education Drive organized by the Minority Association of Pre-health Students and the Center for Community Service Initiatives.

Dr. Stephanie Bingham, MAPS advisor, is reminding everyone that it is easy to support the project.

“Simply identify the Box Tops logo on household products you already purchase, including many grocery items, and cut the logo from the packaging,” she said. “You may submit your Box Tops in the donation boxes on campus.”

Donation boxes are found at various locations, including in the CCSI office, Adrian 208.

“If there is not a donation box in your area, you may request one,” Bingham said.

Alternatively, Box Tops donations may be sent via interoffice mail to Bingham in the Department of Biology, Siena 309. She can also arrange for donation pickup from individuals on campus.
