Community Partners Named to QEP Implementation Committee

Two community partners have been named to Barry’s QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) Implementation Committee. They are Sibyl Brown, volunteer coordinator at Feeding South Florida, and Saliha Nelson, vice president of URGENT, Inc.

Feeding South Florida, based in Pembroke Park, BrowardCounty, is the leading domestic hunger relief organization in this region. The agency functions as one of 202 food banks in the Feeding America network.

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) presented a Community Partnership Award to Feeding South Florida during Barry’s inaugural Community Engagement Awards last academic year.

The Miami-based URGENT is a youth and community development organization dedicated to empowering young minds to transform their communities. URGENT (Urban Renewal Greater Enhancement National Team) is currently celebrating 20 years of service to the Miami community.

University Provost Dr. Linda Peterson appointed Brown and Nelson to the QEP Implementation Committee on the recommendation of the CCSI. The committee will be chaired by the associate vice president for undergraduate studies and the QEP director.

Service-Learning Fellowships Available to Faculty

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) will offer two service-learning fellowships to faculty for academic year 2015–2016.

Service-learning is defined as “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with course work and critical reflection to enrich the learning experience, foster civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

Service-learning fellows serve as workshop coordinator/instructors, faculty mentors, and engaged scholars. They participate in a yearlong faculty development program focused on service-learning pedagogy, practice, and associated scholarship.

Faculty members interested in the fellowships are asked to contact CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen, gbowen@barry.edu.

Proposals Being Accepted for Community Engagement Symposium

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) invites faculty, staff, students, and community partners to participate in BarryUniversity’s 2nd annual Community Engagement Symposium on Thursday, March 26, 2015. The symposium will bring together campus and community stakeholders to network and explore community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives.

Proposals are being accepted for concurrent presentations during two sessions of the symposium. Relevant topics include service-learning, civic engagement, community-based research, community-focused fieldwork and internships, community-engaged scholarship, and community partnerships. Session formats are: 45-minute oral presentation, panel discussion, roundtable, and poster presentation.

The proposal submission deadline is Monday, January 12.

Further information is available from the CCSI, service@barry.edu.

Campus Invited to Deliberative Dialogue This Tuesday

Students, alumni, faculty, and staff are invited to join community partners for the Deliberative Dialogue forum this Tuesday afternoon on Barry’s main campus.

The CCSI has adapted deliberative dialogue as a method of civic learning and engagement. Campus and community participants work toward a shared understanding of specific issues as well as practical solutions.

The event is free and open to the public.

The next seminar of the Faculty Learning Community for Engaged Scholarship (FLC) will be held this Wednesday, November 19, from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m., in Adrian 208.
