Barry Students Make a Difference in the Community

Barry students, faculty, and staff participated in 13 community service projects on Make a Difference Day.

Project sites included Homestead in Miami-DadeCounty and Dania Beach in Broward.

Each project was designed to allow students to explore career interests while having a positive impact on the community. Community partners indicated that the students did make a difference through service.

Students conducted community-needs assessments; carried out beautification and renovation projects; served as mentors to youth in crisis; interviewed undocumented farm workers; promoted awareness about human trafficking; worked on community gardens and environmental restoration projects; and participated in activities with residents of nursing, rehabilitation, and homeless centers.

The 169 participants included students in Barry’s First-Year Experience (FYE) Seminar as well as representatives of Barry student organizations, including the Alternative Spring Break Committee and MALES (Men Achieving Leadership, Excellence, and Success). Six FYE instructors and three Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) staff members participated.

Barry Service Corps Leaders assigned to the CCSI supervised the projects and facilitated reflection activities.

The community service projects were designed in collaboration with community partners to build on the Career Development Center’s theme for first-year students, “Discover Your Calling.” Several projects allowed participants to address immediate community needs while others provided an opportunity for students to work on social justice initiatives.

Nursing Students Lend a Hand at Little Haiti Event

A group of Barry Nursing students assisted with this year’s Jericho event at the Notre Dame d'Haiti Catholic Church. The students lent a hand with the healthcare booth at the event.

Jericho is an annual festival of worship, education, and musical entertainment that takes place on Notre Dame d'Haiti's five-acre property in Little Haiti. This year’s event was held on October 17.

Earlier that day, the five-member group of clinical students and Assistant Professor Dr. Mureen Shaw visited the church, regarded as the epicenter for the spiritual and social sustenance of the Little Haiti community. Father Reginald (Reggie) Jean-Mary, the parish administrator, took them on a tour of the property. It was during the tour that the students learned about Jericho 2014. They accepted Fr. Reggie’s invitation to participate, and they were back at Notre Dame d'Haiti that evening.

Dr. Shaw thanked the students for "stepping up to the plate and representing Barry University in such a positive manner.” She added: “I am truly so very proud that they have embraced community partnership and so generously gave of their time and talents.”

Jubilee Center of South Broward Appeals for Donations

The Jubilee Center of South Broward is appealing for donations of food items for Thanksgiving distribution.

“Currently our shelves are almost bare,” according to the JubileeCenter’s Brenda Farrell. “As many of you know, monetary and food subsidies have been cut this year, for those who need it most.”

Farrell further explained: “Our baskets are for families with children, and our concern is many children will not have a Thanksgiving meal this year. The deadline for delivering the items is Thursday, November 20th. This will give us the needed time to make the baskets for distribution on Tuesday, November 25th. Also, please do not wrap your basket, in case we have additional items for each basket.”

The Jubilee Center of South Broward is located at 2020 Scott Street in Hollywood, Fla. Jubilee may be reached by email, jubileehwd@broward.org, and by phone, 954-920-0106.
