Community Engagement Symposium Scheduled for March 26

Barry University’s second annual Community Engagement Symposium will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2015.

The event will feature a nationally recognized community engagement scholar-practitioner as lead presenter. Concurrent presentations and a poster session are on the program schedule.

Community Engagement Awards to Coincide with Symposium

The second annual Community Engagement Awards will coincide with the luncheon session of the Community Engagement Symposium on March 26, 2015.

Awards will be presented to community partners, students, faculty, and staff.

Information on this event is available in CEMS (Community Engagement Management System), accessed (under “Programs”) from the CCSI homepage.

School of Law is “Deeply Immersed in the Community"

The Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law is “deeply immersed in the community.”

That’s according to a report prepared by Brian Sites, assistant professor of law and the CCSI’s community engagement liaison in Orlando.

“Through our clinics offering help to individuals from many walks of life to our numerous community service activities (many of which have no connection to law), we strive to improve the lives of all those that we encounter. Through dozens of partnerships, we seek out new ways to serve our students and the community in and beyond Orlando,” Sites said in a recent report.

“From our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program (which the American Bar Association has recognized with nine consecutive National Achievement Awards) to our Women Lawyers Association annual silent auction (which raised over $6,000 last year), the school fosters Barry’s reputation as a school that cares about its community,” the report said. “The law school continues to pursue new, innovative partnerships with the community as well, including new programs under development in Career Services and in the area of experiential learning.”

Sites can be reached at 321-206-5685 or bsites@barry.edu.

Call for Applications for Service-Learning Designation

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) invites faculty members who teach community-engaged courses to apply for the service-learning designation.

Service-learning is defined as “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with course work and critical reflection to enrich the learning experience, foster civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

Sections of courses, internships, practicum assignments, field education, capstones, community-based research, and similar community-focused or community-based assignments may be designated as service-learning.

For further information and to apply, contact the CCSI at gbowen@barry.edu.

Mini-Grants Available for Community-Based Research

The CCSI is offering mini-grants for community-based research (CBR). Faculty who teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses may apply for a mini-grant of up to $500.

A CBR project may be conducted by an entire class, or by a group or team. Each team must include at least one student, faculty member (as co-investigator and/or mentor), and community partner.

CBR proposals should be submitted by November 28.
