Community Engagement Fair Scheduled for September 10

The fall Community Engagement Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 10.

The “Displays and Discussions” segment will take place in the Andreas Courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The first segment of the Fair, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., will be a special presentation for community partners. This presentation is designed to support the implementation of Barry’s Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP, which focuses on personal and social responsibility through experiential learning.

Hall to Facilitate Faculty Learning Community

Dr. Pamela Hall, a 2013-2014 service-learning faculty fellow, will facilitate the Faculty Learning Community for Engaged Scholarship (FLC) this academic year.

An assistant professor of psychology, Dr. Hall has been an FLC member since 2012.

Her scholarly work includes research on the effectiveness of the photovoice method of reflection in service-learning. She has made several presentations on the topic at professional conferences.

The FLC is an interdisciplinary group of faculty members who engage in a collaborative, yearlong program focusing on community-engaged scholarship. This kind of scholarship integrates work in the areas of teaching, research, and service to address community issues. The FLC provides an intellectual venue in which faculty can exchange ideas with an academically diverse group and learn from one another’s experiences.

Faculty members interested in joining the FLC should contact Hall at phall@barry.edu.

Barry Presenters for Community Engagement Conference

Barry staff and faculty members will be among the presenters at the Eastern Region Campus Compact Conference in October.

Courtney Berrien, Dr. Glenn Bowen, and Dr. Sean Foreman will make a presentation on “Campus Democracy Project and Deliberative Dialogue: Avenues for Civic Awareness and Action.” Berrien, the CCSI’s associate director, and Foreman, associate professor of political science, are co-chairs of Barry’s Campus Democracy Project. Bowen, director of the CCSI, created a Deliberative Dialogue Series at Barry in 2012.

Dr. Pamela Hall, assistant professor of psychology, and Dr. Celeste Fraser Delgado, associate professor of English and humanities in the School of Professional and Career Education, will a make a presentation titled “Focusing on Community Needs.” Hall and Delgado are former service-learning faculty fellows.

Hosted by Florida Campus Compact, this community engagement conference will be held October 15-17 in Jacksonville.

Barry Service Corps Leaders Selected

The CCSI has selected 15 students for its civic leadership program. Undergraduates Akil Andrews, Mickaelle Celigny, Kevin Dalia, Seretse Davis, JoLeaha Dotter, Devon Garner, Keiara Greene-Williams, Gilberte Jean-Francois, Shanique Kingston, Myles Merritt, Donté Roberts, Krystal Sabdul, Quayneshia Smith, Alejandro Tobon, and Rajon Wright will be the Barry Service Corps (BSC) Leaders during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Andrews, Davis, Garner, Kingston, Merritt-Lee, Roberts, and Tobon were BSC members last year.

The CCSI has restructured the BSC as part of the Federal Work-Study Community Service Program. All students participating in Federal Work-Study Community Service will become BSC members.

“The BSC Leaders will receive ongoing professional development, serve as student leaders for co-curricular service programs, and work directly with local community organizations,” explained CCSI Associate Director Courtney Berrien.

“BSC Leaders will support the work of the CCSI by recruiting students for community engagement activities and serving as service trip leaders,” Berrien said. “Additionally, each leader will design and implement an individual service/advocacy project that targets one of four designated social issues: youth development, global citizenship, urban health, and local community engagement.”

The BSC Leaders also will address these issues by working in partnership with four local agencies: UrbanPromise Miami, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Urban GreenWorks, and PACT (People Acting for Community Together).

Program orientation, which took place August 19-22, included interactive workshops focused on team-building, facilitation, diversity, social justice issues, and social change methodologies. Some of the BSC Leaders also met with community partners at agency sites.
