Schedule Set for 2014-2015 Deliberative Dialogue Series

 

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCS) has set the schedule for the 2014-2015 Deliberative Dialogue Series. Two sessions will be held in the fall and two in the spring, in Andreas 111.

 

The schedule is as follows:

 

  • Tuesday, September 23: College Access and Rising Tuition
  • Tuesday, November 18: Human Trafficking
  • Tuesday, January 20: School-to-Prison Pipeline
  • Tuesday, April 7: Industrial Agriculture and Food Access     

 

“Deliberative Dialogue encourages civic participation by stimulating conversation around matters of public concern,” notes CCSI Associate Director Courtney Berrien.

 

Students and alumni, faculty and staff, and community members participate in each dialogue.

Faculty to Present at Service-Learning Conference

 

A panel of Barry faculty members will participate in the 2014 Conference of the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE). The theme of the conference is “Reaping What We Sow: Growing a Culture of Community Engagement.”

 

In keeping with the theme, the Barry panel will make a presentation on “The Ecosystem of Engagement.”

 

Panelists will include Dr. Celeste Fraser Delgado (School of Professional and Career Education), Dr.

Glenn A. Bowen (CCSI), Dr. Paula A. Delpech (College of Health Sciences and Nursing), Dr. Pamela D. Hall (Department of Psychology), and Dr. Carmen McCrink and Dr. Heidi Whitford (School of Education).

 

The conference is scheduled for September 29–October 1 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

Barry faculty members have made presentations at the IARSLCE Annual Conference since 2002.

 

CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen was a conference proposal reviewer this year.

 

 

 

Community Engagement Literature Provided through CEMS

 

A variety of community engagement literature is available in the Community Engagement Management System, or CEMS.

 

The literature covers community service, service-learning, community-based research, engaged scholarship, and other forms of community engagement. It includes full-text journal articles.

 

CEMS is accessible from the CCSI homepage.

 

Students, faculty, and staff must enter their Barry username and password to log into the system.

 

Registered community partners also have access.

Volunteer Opportunities Available to Staff and Faculty

 

A large number of voluntary service opportunities are available to Barry staff and faculty in South Florida this summer.

 

Among the many opportunities available to volunteers are two summer camps in July and August. Details of these opportunities are provided below.

Learning for Life Summer Camp at Edison Park K8 Center

Monday–Friday, July and August ¦7:00 AM–6:00 PM ¦500 NW 67th Street, Miami,FL 33150

 

The Learning for Life Summer Camp provides at-risk elementary- and middle-school students with academic enrichment and extra-curricular programming during  their summer vacation. Activities include arts and crafts, sports, and field trips as well as academic instruction provided by certified teachers.

Divine Hope Summer Camp at Divine Hope Restoration Ministry

Divine Hope Restoration Ministry’s Summer Camp provides learning and enrichment activities to youth (age 4–12) in the areas of art, music, dance, graphic design and media, journalism, and sports and nutrition. Camp coordinators are looking for volunteers to serve as guest instructors conducting one-hour workshops for campers.

CCSI Newsletter Schedule

 

The CCSI Newsletter is being published less frequently until the start of the new academic year, in August. The next issue will be published on August 11. Regular weekly issues of the newsletter will resume two weeks later, on August 25.
