Community Engagement Fair to Feature Workshop for Partners

The Community Engagement Fair in academic year 2014-2015 will feature a special workshop for community partners, preceding the usual displays and discussions. Senior University officials are expected to participate in the event.

Organized by the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI), the biannual Fair brings community partners to Barry’s main campus in Miami Shores for displays and discussions with students, faculty, and staff.

The additional workshop component is designed to support the implementation of the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP, which focuses on personal and social responsibility through experiential learning. The workshop will highlight community engagement and collaboration as one of the major learning outcomes of the QEP.

The fall Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 10, and the spring Fair in January.

For the fall Fair, the workshop (with breakfast) is scheduled for 9:00–11:00 a.m. in Room 111 of theAndreas Building. The displays and discussions (with lunch) will take place in the Andreas Courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Experiential Learning Coordinator to Support QEP Implementation

Lizbeth M. James, MSW, has been assigned the role of experiential learning coordinator, effective July 1. She has been a Barry employee since February 2005.

Based in the CCSI, the experiential learning coordinator position was created to support the implementation of Barry’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

The title of the QEP is “Fostering Personal and Social Responsibility Through Experiential Learning.” Community engagement and collaboration is one of the three learning outcomes.

The responsibilities of the position are as follows: (a) Develop and maintain QEP-focused community partnerships, (b) manage the experiential learning database, (c) facilitate experiential learning projects and placements, (d) assist faculty with development and coordination of reflection activities, (e) support students in meeting critical reflection requirements, (f) coordinate and present experiential learning components of faculty professional development, and (g) support QEP assessment.

For more than nine years, James was a social worker in the University’s Office of Public Guardian in Davie. Additionally, in 2006-2009, she was an adjunct instructor in the School of Social Work, where she earned her master’s degree in 2000. She previously worked in the community-based nonprofit sector.

James will report directly to CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen and maintain a dotted line reporting relationship with the QEP director.

Federal Work-Study Community Service Placements Underway

Placement of Barry students in community service positions as part of Federal Work-Study (FWS) is underway.

In collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid, the CCSI is placing students mainly with schools, nonprofit agencies, and community-based organizations. The school-based positions are largely with America Reads and America Counts, the tutoring and mentoring component of FWS Community Service.

FWS is a federally funded financial aid program established to provide part-time employment to students who demonstrate financial need. Eligible students receive the FWS award as part of their financial aid package each academic year. They can work off campus at approved sites in a variety of positions that serve the public interest.

Through FWS Community Service, students serve as tutors/mentors, lab assistants, program assistants, project coordinators, volunteer ambassadors, and assistant coaches as well as in other positions that allow them to practice professional skills while serving in the community.

Community partners interested in the FWS Community Service Program are asked to contact Courtney Berrien, CCSI associate director, at cberrien@barry.edu or 305-899-4017.

Off-campus FWS supervisors have been invited to an orientation and training session on Wednesday, August 13, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. For further information on the orientation, e-mail service@barry.edu or phone 305-899-3696.

La Paloma Receives Funds Through Public Space Challenge

La Paloma Neighborhood Association, a partnership between Barry and its neighbors immediately north of the

main campus, was recently awarded $8,500 through the Miami Foundation’s Public Space Challenge.

Stuart Kennedy, the Miami Foundation’s senior programs officer, made the disclosure last month in an e-mail to Dr. Celeste Fraser Delgado, a Barry faculty member and association leader.

Barry faculty and staff supported La Paloma’s participation in the challenge.
