CCSI Registers 20 Agencies as Community Partners

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) registered 20 agencies as new community partners in academic year 2013-2014.

Dania Beach PATCH/TOUCH Broward, Heartland Hospice, The Life of Freedom Center, and Miami Beach Community Church are among the new community partners. So is Gratigny Elementary School. Although the University has collaborated with Gratigny for several years, the school was not previously registered as a partner.

The others are Arch Creek Park; Empower A Student Program; Florida Virtual Volunteers; Holocaust Documentation and Education Center; The Humanity Project; The Learning for Life Program; The Dan Marino Foundation – Marino Campus; Mentoring Valuable Proteges, Inc.; Miami-Dade Animal Services; Miami Coalition for the Homeless; Pet Project for Pets; Service For Peace; Special Olympics of Miami-Dade County; A Worthy Cause, Inc.; and University Plaza Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Nursing Students Provide Service to Homeless

Barry University community nursing students provided health screenings, first aid, foot care, and health education to homeless persons in Miami Beach recently.

The students provided service as part of a program called Matthew 25, organized at the Miami Beach CommunityChurch.

Staff and Faculty Urged to Render Service this Summer

The CCSI is urging Barry staff and faculty members to render service in the local community this summer.

“Collaborative service in community settings advances the University’s mission,” according to a CCSI statement. “All employees should support ongoing efforts to address social, economic, and environmental problems in the communities surrounding Barry’s campuses.”

Among the many voluntary service opportunities available to Barry staff and faculty are restoration projects with the Biscayne Nature Center, food distribution with Farm Share, and “citizenship coach” assignments with the Florida Immigrant Coalition.

See Volunteer Opportunities below.

For additional information on how to get involved this summer, contact Courtney Berrien, associate director of the CCSI, at cberrien@barry.edu.
