Deliberative Dialogue to Focus on Environmental Sustainability “Environmental Sustainability: Who Will Be Left Behind?” is the topic of the next Deliberative Dialogue this Thursday, April 10, in Andreas 111. The 90-minute event, scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Panelists will include Dr. Pandwe Gibson, board president of Ecotech Visions; Maggie Fernandez, WE-LAB program manager at Dream in Green; Sam Van Leer, founder and president of Urban Paradise Guild; John Powell, president of the Barry Model United Nations Club, and David Zaret, a Barry alumnus. Main Campus Serving as Tax-Assistance Site Barry’s main campus in Miami Shores is serving as a tax-assistance site. The campus has met 100 percent of the quality site requirements for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, said Gina Ruiz-Fernandez, a senior tax consultant with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Following a field visit by local officials from the IRS Office of Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication on March 22, Ruiz-Fernandez noted that the Miami Shores site is following established operational procedures and adhering to the volunteer standards of conduct. Participation in VITA is a requirement for students taking ACC 362-01: Federal Income Tax, a service-learning course taught by Dr. Kevin Kemerer, associate professor of accounting. Dr. Kemerer is the site coordinator for the VITA program on Barry’s main campus. In a March 24 e-mail, Ms. Ruiz-Fernandez noted that the site coordinator has “established and maintained procedures that are exemplary.” She thanked Barry students who “have demonstrated a sincere willingness to help the community” through the VITA program. VITA offers free tax help to people who generally make $52,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. ACC 362-01 is the only SL-designated course in the Andreas School of Business. “This type of effort reflects what Barry is all about: educate (learn) while serving,” said Dean Tomislav Mandakovic in reference to students’ participation in VITA. |
Nursing and Fine Arts Courses Get Service-Learning Designation NUR 422: Community/Public Health Nursing and PHO 426: Documentary Photography have been designated as service-learning courses. All three sections of the Nursing course have met the requirements for the service-learning designation. Instructors include Dr. Paula A. Delpech, the course coordinator. NUR 422 is the first SL-designated course in the College of Health Sciences. Associate Professor Scott Weber is the instructor for the photography course, the first SL-designated course in the Department of Fine Arts. |
Call for Conference Session Proposals The organizers of the Fourth Annual Eastern Regional Campus Compact Conference are seeking workshop and poster session proposals from colleges and universities. The mission of the conference is to advance institutional and community engagement for the public good. Scheduled for October 15-17 in Jacksonville, Florida, the conference will highlight the 50th anniversary of the Civic Rights Act. The conference theme is “Moving Us Forward: Fifty Years On: From Civil Rights to Critical Engagement,” and the deadline for proposal submission is May 1. The “Box Tops for Education” collection drive will end soon, and donations of box tops are still needed. For each box top – from groceries and household products – that is donated, North Miami Middle School will receive a 10-cent contribution toward much-needed supplies. Collection boxes have been placed in various locations on campus, including the CCSI office, Adrian 208. |
