Deliberative Dialogue to Focus on Environmental Sustainability

“Environmental Sustainability: Who Will Be Left Behind?” is the topic of the next Deliberative Dialogue, scheduled for Thursday, April 10, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., in Andreas 111.

Among the questions to be explored are these: As environmental sustainability becomes increasingly important to public health, economic growth, and quality of life, what communities and demographic groups are at risk of not being protected? What practices and policies can be implemented to ensure that the benefits of environmental health are accessible to everyone? Issues such as green urbanism, environmental stewardship, eco-technologies, environmentalism and civil rights, social ecology, race and class also will be explored in this forum, which is free and open to the public.

Deliberative Dialogue is a series of moderated discussions, eliciting “voices and views from campus and community.” The series provides a forum for working towards a common understanding of social issues, identifying practical solutions, and promoting workable public policy. Students, faculty, staff, and community members discuss current issues in an intentional, purposeful manner.

Barry Students Assist School with Chemistry Lab Activities

The Department of Physical Sciences is partnering with Doctors Charter School to provide lab activities for six chemistry students at that school. The students and their chemistry teacher, Sharon Thomas, come to campus on Thursdays to conduct laboratory experiments.

The partnership is a result of discussions last semester between Ms. Thomas and Dr. Tony Wallner, associate dean of undergraduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, to devise a curriculum that would meet the needs of her students and expose them to lab activities that are at the level of a college course.

Three Barry students, Alex Higa, Jason Llaneras, and Van Williams, are serving as mentors during the lab activities this semester. In addition, Higa and Llaneras have accepted the challenge to be instructors for one of the lab sessions designed for the Doctors Charter School students.

Community Partner Thanks Theology Students

UrbanPromise Miami has thanked Steffano Montano's theology students for their service-learning participation this semester. Over the course of the semester, the students will complete more than 200 service hours, the organization noted recently in its newsletter, UrbanNews!

According to the newsletter, partnerships such as the one with Montano’s class “are critical to UrbanPromise Miami's ability to provide the best programs and services to the children and families that we serve.”

UrbanPromise Miami is a Barry community partner.
