Nursing Students to Assist Miami Beach Homeless

Five groups from Barry Nursing (NUR 422) students are scheduled to assist homeless persons in Miami Beach this semester. Gene Majka, adjunct professor, said the students will check blood pressure and glucose levels, provide foot care, and render first aid to homeless persons who gather as part of a lunch program organized by a local church.

For six years, Barry nursing and podiatry students, together with faculty, supported the H.O.P.E. in Miami Beach Homeless Event. Organized by the Miami BeachCommunity Church, that project ended last December. Vimeo, the video-sharing website, featured Barry participants on December 7, 2013 at the H.O.P.E. in Miami Beach Homeless Event.

Pre-health Students Collecting Box Tops for Education

The Minority Association of Pre-health Students (MAPS) and the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) invite students, faculty, and staff to participate in a campus-wide “Box Tops for Education” collection drive benefiting North MiamiMiddle School

“For each box top that you save and donate, North Miami Middle will receive a 10-cent contribution,” according to a statement from MAPS. “The funds they receive can then be used to help the school acquire much-needed materials such as books and computers. These box tops may be found on groceries and household products you already buy – from cereal to paper products. If everyone participates, we can make a sizeable contribution to this neighborhood school.”

Participating departments will receive collection boxes and literature explaining the box tops promotion. To participate, department representatives should contact the project coordinator at BarryMAPS@gmail.com.

“A Place at the Table” on the Schedule

The next event on the calendar for 40 Days of Peace is the screening of “A Place at the Table,” a documentary concerning hunger in the United States. The film show will take place on Tuesday, February 25, in the Weber Game Room, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Described as “engaging and enraging,” the movie is directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, with appearances by Jeff Bridges, Raj Patel, and chef Tom Colicchio. At the 2013 IDA Documentary Awards, “A Place at the Table” received the Pare Lorentz Award, which recognizes model filmmaking, including on the use of the natural environment and the illumination of pressing social problems.

To commemorate 40 Days of Peace, students also have an opportunity to sign a Peace Pledge at http://www.40daysofpeace.org/pledge/.
