Events Honor Life and Legacy of Civil
Rights Leader Barry
University is celebrating 40 Days of Peace with a number of events including
a Sexual Awareness Dialogue and a movie screening. The Sexual
Awareness Dialogue will be held this Thursday, February 13, from 7:00 to 9:00
p.m., in the Landon Events Room. The movie,
“A Place at the Table,” will be screened on Tuesday, February 25, at 8:00 p.m.,
in the Weber Game Room. Students
also have an opportunity to sign a Peace Pledge at http://www.40daysofpeace.org/pledge/. The 40 Days of
Peace began on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 20, and will
run for six weeks, through February 28. The celebration honors the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader who championed the cause of peace
and the “beloved community.” During these 40 days, national and local
partners, individuals, families, communities, education institutions, and
various organizations are focusing on building the peaceful community that
King advocated. The Center
for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is coordinating the events at Barry with
sponsorship from Service For Peace, a lead agency of the Corporation for
National and Community Service, responsible for promoting the King Day of Service and the 40 Days of Peace campaign. Barry received a $2,500 Service For Peace
grant. For further information, contact CCSI Program Coordinator Caitlin Geis atcgeis@barry.edu. |
Another Course Gets
Service-Learning Designation The
Service-Learning Course Review Committee has approved another course for the
SL designation. Psychology faculty member Dr. Pamela Hall’s PSY 497-01, 02:
Senior Seminar is now on the list of courses that will carry the “SL” on
students’ official transcripts. Service-learning
is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community
service with course work and critical reflection to enrich the learning
experience, foster civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
SL-designed courses require significant student service in the community. “Designating courses with the ‘SL’ promotes deep integration of
thoughtfully organized community service into the curriculum and high standards
of service-learning practice,” noted CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen. “The ‘SL’
notation confirms that Barry University is using the curriculum to meet its
commitment to collaborative service in community settings. Furthermore,
designating courses as SL will help to place Barry in the top tier of U.S.
universities with exemplary service-learning/community engagement programs.” |
