4:00 – 5:30 PM

Andreas Building, Room 111

Barry faculty and staff, students and alumni, and community members are invited to this Tuesday’s Deliberative Dialogue focusing on immigration. The discussion will include immigration reform, the contributions of undocumented workers, border security, and ethical considerations.

This event is part of the Deliberative Dialogue series––moderated discussions for working towards a common understanding of social issues, identifying practical solutions, and promoting workable public policy.

Eleven million undocumented people currently live in the United States.

Nomination Deadline is This Friday

The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is accepting nominations and applications for the inaugural Community Engagement Awards. The nomination/application deadline is this Friday, January 31.

Award categories are Community Impact (for Students and Student Organizations), Service-Learning Faculty, Community-Based Research, Engaged Scholarship, Community Partnership, Engaged Department, and Community Engagement Educator.

The Awards Luncheon will be held on March 12. This event will coincide with the inaugural Community Engagement Symposium.

The nomination/application form is available by logging into CEMS at www.barry.edu/service or by contacting the CCSI at service@barry.edu or 305-899-3696.

Student to be Selected for Newman Award Nomination

The CCSI will select one of this year’s Community Impact Award nominees as a possible nominee for Campus Compact’s Newman Civic Fellows Award. Information on the student will be submitted to University President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD, who is expected to make the nomination.

The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

Nominated by Campus Compact member presidents, these students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world.
