Application Deadline for Service-Learning Fellowships is Friday
The application deadline for service-learning fellowships is this Friday, December 13. Two fellowships will be available in academic year2013-2014 to full-time faculty members who teach undergraduate courses. The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) awards fellowships through a competitive process.
Each service-learning fellow receives a joint appointment in the CCSI to serve as a workshop instructor, faculty mentor, and engaged scholar. The fellows also assist in promoting scholarship associated with service-learning pedagogy.

Proposal submission deadline extended to January 13
The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI)has extended the proposal submission deadline for Barry University’s inaugural Community Engagement Symposium to January 13.
Proposals should focus on such topics as service-learning, civic engagement, community-based research, community-focused fieldwork/internships, community-engaged scholarship, and community partnerships.
Scheduled for March 12, 2014, the symposium will bring together campus and community stakeholders to network and explore community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives.
Goals of the symposium are to (1) identify community needs and resources for building capacity to address social, economic, and environmental issues; (2) share strategies for effective university–community partner collaboration; (3) explain the concepts of service-learning, community-based research, and community-engaged scholarship;and (4) explore methods for evaluating community engagement outcomes for various stakeholders.
Proposals are being accepted for 45-minuteconcurrent presentations, including panel discussions and roundtables, during two sessions of the symposium. There will also be a poster session.

Nomination and application deadline is January 31
Nominations and applications are being accepted for Barry University’s inaugural Community Engagement Awards. The nominations/application deadline is January 31.
Award categories are Community Impact (for Students and Student Organizations), Service-Learning Faculty, Community-Based Research,Engaged Scholarship, Community Partnership, Engaged Department, and Community Engagement Educator.
The Awards Luncheon will be held on March 12. This event will coincide with the Community Engagement Symposium.

SL designation for courses in sociology and theology
Two more courses – one in sociology and the other in theology – have been approved for the service-learning (SL) designation.They are SOC 246-01: Marriage and Family, taught by Dr. Victor Romano, and THE 201-07:Theology: Faith, Beliefs and Traditions, taught by Dr. Deena Grant. The courses will be labeled “SL” in Web Advisor and on students’ transcripts.
Women’s Soccer Team pack to help families in need
On Saturday, November 23, Barry University’s Women’s Soccer Team and Coaches Denise Brolly and Kevin Lamy participated in Christ Fellowship’s Thanksgiving Reach Beyond event at the church’s Downtown Miami campus. The team helped to unload a truck full of turkeys, canned goods, and non-perishable food items as well as sort and pack them into Thanksgiving boxes and backpacks for elementary, middle, and high school students at risk forgoing without food over the weekends. Altogether, the team helped pack 250Thanksgiving boxes and fill 500 backpacks for families in Overtown, Little Havana, Hialeah, and Miami Springs.
Missions Directors Elizabeth Kourtesis and Esther Toribio expressed thankfulness for the team’s help. Meanwhile, freshman midfielder Aleja Sanchez observed that “everyone was working so hard and it was so nice to see people give back because they wanted to.” She added: “It shows that there are good people left in the world. It felt amazing to be able to give families the opportunity to celebrate a wonderful holiday like Thanksgiving. I’m so glad we volunteered and hope we do it again soon.”
Yleinia Galeano, administrative assistant with the CCSI and member of Christ Fellowship, commented: “It’s wonderful to see Barry students connect with the local church to bring hope to families who are hurting this holiday season. We hope that this can be an ongoing partnership.”
