CCSI Offering Two Service-Learning Fellowships to Faculty

 

Two service-learning fellowships will be available in academic year 2013-2014 to full-time faculty members who teach undergraduate courses. Fellowships will be awarded through a competitive process, and the application deadline is December 13.

 

Each service-learning fellow receives a joint appointment in the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) to serve as a workshop instructor, faculty mentor, and engaged scholar. The fellows also assist in promoting scholarship associated with service-learning pedagogy. 

 

Details of the fellowships and the application form are available by logging into the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS) or by contacting the CCSI.

 

 

 

Proposal submission deadline is Monday, December 9

 

The proposal submission deadline for Barry University’s inaugural Community Engagement Symposium is next Monday, December 9. Proposals are being accepted for 45-minute concurrent presentations, including panel discussions and roundtables, during two sessions of the symposium. Poster proposals are being accepted as well.

 

Proposals should focus on such topics as service-learning, civic engagement, community-based research, community-focused fieldwork/internships,community-engaged scholarship, and community partnerships.

 

The symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12. This event will bring together campus and community stakeholders to network and explore community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives.

 

The proposal form and further information are available by logging into the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS).

 

 

 

Nominations being accepted from students, faculty, and staff

 

Students,faculty, and staff members may submit nominations and applications for Community Engagement Awards up to January 21. The nomination/application form is available in the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS) at www.barry.edu/service.

 

The award categories are Community Impact (for Students and Student Organizations),Service-Learning Faculty, Community-Based Research, Engaged Scholarship,Community Partnership, Engaged Department, and Community Engagement Educator.

 

The awards luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12.

 

 

 

Faculty make presentation at national conference

 

Dr. Nickesia Gordon and Dr. Margaret Chojnacki, associate professors of communication, and Dr. Glenn Bowen, associate professor and director of the CCSI, made a presentation on “Social Media and Advocacy: Student Engagement with Social Issues via Social Media Platforms” at the 99th Annual Convention of the National Communication Association in Washington, DC, on November 23.

 

 

 

NYLC offers Webinar: Moving from Service to Social Justice

 

Barry faculty and staff are invited to a service-learning webinar, “Moving from Service to Social Justice,” on Wednesday, December 11, starting at 6 p.m. Hosted by the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC), the webinar will provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to learn ways to engage students by utilizing service-learning to create social justice in the community. The webinar will focus on learning about, and understanding, community needs while working with partners to solve the issues of social justice.
