Service-Learning Fellowships Available to Faculty
Two service-learning fellowships will be available in academic year 2013-2014 to full-time faculty members who teach undergraduate courses. Fellowships will be awarded through a competitive process, and the application deadline is December 13.
Each service-learning fellow receives a joint appointment in the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) to serve as a workshop instructor, faculty mentor, and engaged scholar. The fellows also assist in promoting scholarship associated with service-learning pedagogy.

Proposal submission deadline is December 9
The proposal submission deadline for Barry University’s inaugural Community Engagement Symposium is December 9. Proposals are being accepted for 45-minute concurrent presentations, including panel discussions and roundtables, during two sessions of the symposium. Poster proposals are being accepted as well.
Proposals should focus on such topics as service-learning, civic engagement, community-based research, community-focused fieldwork/internships, community-engaged scholarship, and community partnerships.
The symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, 2014. This event will bring together campus and community stakeholders to network and explore community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives.

Nominations being accepted in seven categories
The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is accepting nominations and applications for Community Engagement Awards in seven categories. The categories are Community Impact (for Students and Student Organizations), Service-Learning Faculty, Community-Based Research, Engaged Scholarship, Community Partnership, Engaged Department, and Community Engagement Educator.
The nomination/application form is available in the Community Engagement Management System (CEMS) at www.barry.edu/service. Nominations/applications must be submitted by January 21.

Faculty make scholarly contributions to conference, journals
Service-Learning Fellow Dr. Celeste Fraser Delgado (School of Adult and Continuing Education) presented “Power vs. Service: Models for Community Engagement from Cultural and Performance Studies” at the Annual Conference of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement in Omaha, Nebraska, earlier this month.
Meanwhile, CCSI Director Dr. Glenn Bowen’s review of the book Higher Education and Civic Engagement was published in the first issue of the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement. Titled “Situating Civic Engagement in a Global Context,” the review is available at http://journals.sfu.ca/iarslce/index.php/journal/article/view/12/12.

CCSI welcomes AmeriCorps VISTA member
Earlier this month, the CCSI welcomed Caitlin Geis, a new Florida Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) member. Geis will serve on the CCSI staff for one year. She will organize Days of Service, coordinate regular service trips and projects, serve as an advisor to the Barry Service Corps, and assist with coordination of a project under the auspices of the Community Learning Partnership of Greater Miami Shores.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month winds down
As Barry University’s observance of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month winds down this week, so will a Food and Clothing Drive that will benefit organizations supporting victims of domestic violence and homeless individuals. The organizations include Lotus House, No More Tears, and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami.
As part of the month’s activities, Barry Service Corps members will participate in a meal-packing project at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens on Wednesday morning.
Barry has been marking the month with several events. These include a service project at Earth-N-Us Farm; an SOS Playground Build in Fort Lauderdale with South Florida Campus Compact member institutions; a film titled “A Place at the Table”; the Deliberative Dialogue, “The Poor Becoming Poorer? From Poverty Wages to a Living Wage”; and a Hunger Banquet, “What’s for Dinner?”
