Campus Compact President Praises Barry
Campus Compact President Maureen F. Curley has commended Barry University for developing wide-ranging community engagement initiatives.
“The wide range of work being done on your campus by faculty, students and staff is very impressive,” Curley wrote in a recent e-mail to CCSI Director Glenn Bowen.
Curley mentioned the accomplishments of a Barry social work student, Lucy Virgo, who was selected earlier this year as a Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow. Curley described the student as “truly remarkable.”
Campus Compact is a national coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education.

Markham Park Nursery, a Broward County park, is in need of volunteers to participate in the monthly nursery “Weed and Feed.” Some volunteers will weed and plant in the nursery; others will transport plants to and from the nursery pads and assist with cleanup at the end of the day. Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive, and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type summer and winter sports, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. The next Special Olympics flag football invitational will take place on November 2. Volunteers are needed before the event to assist with registration and during the event to act as umpires, scorekeepers, cheerleaders, and cheering fans in the stands. Special Olympics also needs volunteer emergency medical technicians, photographers, and social media experts. Challenge and Change Community Service ProjectMonday, November 4 ¦ 3:00–7:00 PM ¦ West Homestead Elementary School, 1550 SW Sixth Street, Homestead, FL 33030
The Challenge and Change literacy initiative is funded through a grant from the US Department of Agriculture. Through this project, local youth plan and start long-term community service projects, with literacy mentoring as the main focus.
Volunteers will assist two local after-school programs located at Florida City Elementary and West Homestead Elementary School. Youth involved in this project help students with homework, reading, and writing. This program will continue until May 30, 2014. To volunteer, call 305-253-4841, extn. 256. |

Branches has proudly served the South Florida community – more than 20,000 people – on Thanksgiving Day since 2000, thanks to the support of 5,000 volunteers. Branches partners with dozens of agencies that help to identify clients who would otherwise be hungry and alone at Thanksgiving.
Branches is looking for volunteers to serve at the following eight Thanksgiving sites in Miami-Dade and Broward on Thanksgiving Day:
