Campus Democracy Project Committee Expanded

The organizing committee membership for Barry’s Campus Democracy Project (CDP) has been expanded and co-chairs have been named. The 10 members represent departments in four divisions – Academic Affairs, Institutional Advancement and External Affairs, Mission and Institutional Effectiveness, and Student Affairs.

Co-chaired by Christina Leaño, associate director of the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI), and Dr. Sean Foreman, associate professor of political science, the CDP Organizing Committee also includes Elizabeth Besade (External and Government Affairs), Dr. Laura Finley (Sociology and Criminology), Dr. Pamela Hall (Psychology), Elaine Jahnsen (Center for Student Involvement), Greta Moncayo (Mission Engagement), Leslie Redmond (Student Government Association), Dr. Sandra Roberts (Adult and Continuing Education), and Dr. Guillermo Wated (Psychology).

The CDP Organizing Committee promotes civic engagement through civic learning/political education and participation in the electoral process. The committee is charged with coordinating the institutionalization of voter registration at Barry.

The CDP was a cosponsor of the recent Constitution Day event.

Another course gets service-learning designation

The Service-Learning Course Review Committee has approved a new course, SW 323: Service Learning and Social Work Practice, for the service-learning designation. Dr. Mitchell Rosenwald, an associate professor of social work, submitted the application to the committee.

The committee uses seven criteria to determine whether specific courses should be formally designated as service-learning. Among the criteria: the syllabus must show direct and deliberate connections between the assigned community service and the course content, and it must indicate how these connections will support or enhance student learning. Also, the community agency or service site must be appropriate to the course goals. Other criteria include a minimum number of community service hours and a required percentage of the course grade for the service-learning component.

SW 323, which will be taught for the first time in spring 2014, will require 45 hours of service, well above the 10-hour minimum.

Faculty workshops scheduled for Oct. 15, 17

The CCSI will host two workshops for faculty in October. The first, on October 15 (4:00-5:30), will be “Service-Learning 101” while the second, on October 17 (noon-1:30), will be on community-based research. Both will be held in Adrian 208.

Listeners Volunteer Training

Miami-Dade County Public Schools is seeking English- or Spanish-speaking adults to act as "listeners or sounding boards to make a difference in the life of a child." A Listener is a supportive special adult – not a fixer, rescuer, or advisor. The goal of the Listener is to join the student’s world without judgment. Listeners are not expected to solve the student’s problems. The Listener is there to help build a student’s positive self-esteem and empower the student to develop problem-solving skills.

H.O.P.E. in Miami Beach is a nonprofit organization working to reduce homelessness since 2002. The H.O.P.E. Homeless Events on South Beach provide practical assistance and support to the homeless, including breakfast, lunch, clothing, shoes, nutritional products, hygiene products, haircuts, first aid, and legal identifications.

The next H.O.P.E. event will be on Saturday, October 12, from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at the Miami Beach Community Church.
