Barry Service Corps: Developing Student Leaders Committed to Civic Engagement

The Barry Service Corps (BSC) was launched recently under the auspices of the Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) in an effort to develop student leaders committed to civic engagement.

Ten BSC Leaders have been selected.  They are Akil Andrews, Seretse Davis, Devin Garner, Tyler Green, Kayla Kaufmann, Shanique Kingston, Myles Merritt-Lee, Julia Milman, Donte Roberts, and Alejandro Tobon.

BSC Leaders are “a core group of passionate student leaders who will rally peers around community service and social justice,” explained Sashay Goodletty, CCSI program coordinator. Their primary role is to plan service projects and campus events.

The first service opportunity offered by the BSC was the International Coastal Cleanup held on September 21. The BSC Leaders recruited more than 40 Barry University students to participate in this event.

“Diverse service opportunities and campus events are being planned by our BSC Leaders with high hopes to increase the levels of student participation,” Goodletty said.
