--- Barry Staff and Faculty Urged to Get Involved this Summer The Center for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) is urging Barry University staff and faculty members to get involved in the community this summer. “Collaborative service in community settings advances the university’s mission,” according to a CCSI statement. “All employees should support ongoing efforts to address human, social, economic and environmental problems in the communities surrounding Barry’s campuses.” Among the many service opportunities available near Barry’s main campus are environmental restoration projects with Urban Paradise Guild, food sorting with Feeding South Florida and speaking engagements at a summer camp. Community Partner Spotlight: Heroes Unite Serving the Miami Shores community since 1994, Heroes Unite is committed to upholding the rights of all children to participate in a safe, nurturing environment utilizing the disciplines of art and culture. This organization aims to strengthen at risk-children and their families against substance abuse, delinquency, anti-social behaviors, low self-esteem and violence. More than 500 children and their families have benefited from Heroes Unite programs. These include after-school programs; self-defense and self-esteem classes for victims of domestic violence; the Heroines Choir, featuring survivors of breast cancer; and the Mobile Micro Theatre, which offers an affordable theatre experience. Speakers Needed for Summer Camp Ongoing, each Friday ¦ 9:00–11:00 AM ¦ All Age Tutoring of South Florida exists to empower the community through ESOL classes, GED preparation, college and career guidance to high school students, and tutoring/mentoring to K–12th grade students. The summer camp organizers are seeking student and adult guest speakers with a background in science or psychology to give short presentations on their careers/fields and to encourage students to pursue opportunities in higher education. Feeding Our Future at Barry University Ongoing until Friday, July 26 ¦ 2:00–3:00 PM ¦11300 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33161 Feeding Our Future is an eight-week summer program in which Barry University/Sodexo partners with community hunger-relief organizations to offer meals to children who are out of school for the summer. This resourceful program provides the food and labor necessary to provide nutritious meals to children who would otherwise go hungry. Environmental Restoration with Urban Paradise Guild Urban Paradise Guild (UPG) was founded to bring natural habitats back to Miami by adding native plants, removing invasive species and educating the community. UPG currently has opportunities seven days a week at eight different locations including Oleta River State Park, El Portal and Liberty City. Volunteers are encouraged to take the following items to the site: gardening gloves, outdoor clothing, closed-toed shoes and a reusable water bottle.
