Preventing Homelessness: Responding to the Challenge

Homelessness is a public health concern that affects every community in the United States, and the consequences of homeless are many. People who experience homelessness have difficulty navigating social structures and are vulnerable to exploitation, health problems, and marginalization. The reasons individuals and families become homeless are diverse and complicated.
The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, the agency that provides public funds to local agencies offering services to the county’s homeless population, conducted a count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals and families in January 2017. The census reported that just over 1,000 people were living on the street and that more than 2,800 homeless people slept in shelters.
How do factors such as lack of affordable housing, unemployment, mental health diseases, substance abuse, traumatic experiences, and health crises contribute to homelessness? What are the researched and practiced methods of preventing homelessness? What responsibility do communities have to respond to this challenge?
Join community experts, students, alumni, faculty, and staff to explore this timely issue and collaborative approaches to addressing it.
