Afro Brazilian Music & Dance Festival

Barry University’s Department of Fine Arts presents an Afro-Brazilian Music & Dance Festival from March from 13 – March 18.

Monday, April 13:

An Introduction to the World of Afro-Brazilian Music and Dance
Andy Gato Gallery (Thompson Hall, 2nd Floor)
12 – 1 p.m. 

This brief presentation will explore some of the major components and important figures of the vast Afro-Brazilian tradition. Well-known genres such as samba, bossa nova, and capoeira will be covered as well as styles that exist outside of the realm of popular culture, such as frevo, maracatu, and candomble.

Samba Dance Class
Miller Dance Studio (Thompson Hall, 1st Floor)
7 - 8:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Professor Yvonne Goodridge, students will get up and move their feet to the captivating rhythm of samba. With live music provided by the Barry Bucaneiros, this is sure to be and engaging and exciting class.

Tuesday, April 14:

Choro Masterclass with Clube de Choro
Fine Arts Room 130
7 - 8:30 p.m.

Miami's finest choro musicians will explain the fundamentals of this rich instrumental style that dates back to the late 1800's. This unique ensemble, consisting of flute, cavaquinho, guitar, and pandeiro will showcase the works of great Brazilian composers such as Jacob do Bandolim and Luis Americano. Barry University woodwind students are especially encouraged to participate in this event.

Thursday, April 16:

Samba Batucada Masterclass
Fine Arts Room 130
11 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. 

In this session, directed by Dr. Brian Potts, students will get a hands-on experience with some of the percussion instruments of Brazil’s most famous musical export, samba. Students will learn the fundamentals of the samba batucada style, as well as basic technique on instruments such as repique, caixa, tamborim, and surdo. At the end of this masterclass, students will perform alongside members of Barry’s own percussion group, the Barry Bucaneiros.

Friday, April 17:

Roda De Capoeira
Fine Arts Quadrangle
12 – 1 p.m. 

To wrap up classes for the week, the Fine Arts department will host a Roda de Capoeira in an outdoor setting. Capoeira is a uniquely Brazilian experience that fuses martial arts with dance, accompanied by traditional Brazilian percussion instruments and voice. Led by Professora India of Miami’s own Sol e Lua capoeira group, students will learn the basics of the style as well as witness a high-level and exciting performance.

Saturday, April 18:

Afro-Brazilian Showcase
Broad Center for the Performing Arts
7 p.m.

The finale for Barry’s first Afro-Brazilian Music and Dance Festival will feature some of Miami’s finest performers in the Brazilian arts, including: The Barry Bucaneiros, The Barry University Dance Studio, The Barry Jazz Ensemble, Brasoul, Clube de Choro de Miami, Capoeira Sol e Lua, and Batuke Samba Funk.
