Registration for MLK Day of Service 2017 is now open!

“The time is always right to do what is right” is the theme of Barry University’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, scheduled for January 14, the Saturday that precedes the King Holiday in 2017. Participants will honor the civil rights leader’s legacy and learn about contemporary social issues through collaborative service.

The day’s theme references a commencement address Dr. King delivered to students at Oberlin College in 1965. He gave that speech within the context of a turbulent time in American history, following the murder of three civil rights workers in Mississippi and riots in several U.S. cities.

During Barry’s MLK Day of Service, students, faculty, and staff will address current social issues in Miami’s communities of color, including food security, youth development, education, and environmental justice. They will work in community gardens, landscape public spaces, and remove non-native plant species in Liberty City, Little Haiti, North Miami, and Virginia Key.

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the MLK Day of Service is an “opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service.”

Participants are asked to register online and to wear closed-toe shoes at the service sites. T-shirts, breakfast, and lunch will be provided.
