MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University men’s tennis team (7-0, 2-0 SSC) successfully completed a seven-match streak in their win over the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (9-0) on Thursday afternoon.
Rutgers University has announced that it will be cutting its tennis programs after the completion of the 2007 season but that did not draw any sympathy from the Bucs in their attack on the courts today.
In doubles action, Patrick Rittenauer and Roman Werschel battled a tight match at the number one position over Arjun Vaidya and Matthew Fawcett coming out victorious, 8-5. That was as close as the Bucs would let the Knights come to victory. Dirk Benninghaus and Victor Rodrigues defend the number two doubles position by defeating Dale Madan and Andrew Tervooren, 8-1, while Andrew Sharnov and Manuel Lauter teamed up at number three for a victory over Lawrence Zakrevsky and Ilya Kazakin-Kuteyev, 8-1.
The singles matches showed no mercy against the Knights, as four of the Bucs’ six matches played edged complete shut outs. Rittenauer defended his number one position against Vaidya, 6-2, 6-2 while Werschel moved into the number two position to defeat Fawcett, 6-0, 6-3. Sharnov reigned victorious at number three against Tervooren, 6-0, 6-1 as Benninghaus also neared a shut out at number four in his match against Zakrevsky, 6-1, 6-0. Lauter and Rodriguez cleaned up at number five and six with 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 wins respectively.
The Bucs will spend the weekend on the road facing Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Saturday, Mar. 17 at 1:00 pm and then on to Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla. on Sunday, Mar. 18 at 2:30pm.
