TAMPA, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball (9-14, 2-6 SSC) dropped a well-fought 3-0 match to the #1 Tampa Spartans (19-1, 8-0 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference play on Friday night at the Bob Martinez Center. The Buccaneers fell by scores of 30-20, 30-27 and 30-21.

Both teams opened the match by going point-for-point in the first game. Barry finally managed to rip off three consecutive points for a 17-14 lead over the top-ranked Spartans. But after a timeout by Tampa head coach Chris Catanach, the Spartans closed out the game on a 16-3 scoring run for the 30-20 win.

In game two, the Buccaneers were down 19-10 at one point and began clawing their way back into contention. Barry finally pulled to within one, 28-27, but Tampa scored the final two points to take the set 30-27.

The Bucs refused to quit and continued scrapping for points down the stretch tying the final game at 18-18. However, the Spartans closed out the last set on a 12-3 run for the 30-21 win.

Katelen Dixon led the Spartans with 16 kills and hit a .455 clip, while teammate Danielle McDonald followed with 13 kills and a blazing .571 hitting percentage. Melissa Vanderhall added the double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Camilla Pagnan recorded 15 kills on a .239 clip to pace the Buccaneer efforts, while Maria Romanowski dished out 29 assists. Both Stefanie Sveiven and Catlin Shawver finished with eight kills apiece.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 facing the Nova Southeastern Sharks at 7 pm from the University Center in Davie, Fla.
