Final Round
PALM BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Carlos Velez (Miami, Fla.) finished at one-over-par to lead the Barry University to their first tournament win of the season at the NSU Sharks Fall Invitational on Tuesday. The Buccaneers fired a three-round score of 886 (+22) on the 6,806 yard, par 72 PGA National Course.
 
The Buccaneers led after the first two rounds by two strokes and held on to win their first tournament since winning the 2007 NCAA Division II title in May by one stroke over second-place and host Nova Southeastern. NSU and Valdosta State both finished just behind the Buccaneers tied for second with a three-round score of 887 (+23). West Florida (+27) carded a three-round 891 score to finish fourth, while SSC member Lynn (+30) shot an 894 three-round score to rounded out the top five.
 
Velez (+1) was even after the first two rounds of play and fired a one-over-par 73 in the final round to finish fifth out of 74 individuals and paced the Buccaneer winning efforts. Victor Billskoog (+7) finished T11 with a three-round score of 223. Freshman Chris Carlin (+9) claimed 18th place after a third round score of 82, while Preston Roberts (+15) and Guillermo Pumarol (+16) finished tied for 29th and 37th respectively.
 
Valdosta State’s Brent Witcher (-3) finished as the tournament individual medalist with a three-round score of 213 (72-69-72).
 
The Buccaneers will complete their fall season at the Rollins Invitational on Oct. 29-30 in Ocoee, Fla.
 
 
First & Second Rounds
PALM BEACH, Fla. – Three of the top five schools belong to the Sunshine State Conference, but the Barry University men’s golf team leads the field of 15 teams after the first day of the NSU Sharks Fall Invitational on Monday. The Buccaneers (+6) fired a two-round score of 582 on the 6,806 yard, par 72 PGA National Course.
 
Barry fired two identical rounds of 291 and is currently leading the 15-team field by two strokes. Fellow SSC member and host Nova Southeastern (+8) is currently second with a two-round score of 584 (291-293). Lynn (203-285=587) is currently third at +11, while West Florida (290-298=588) and Valdosta State (293-295=588) both tied for fourth to round out the top five at +12.
 
For the second consecutive tournament, freshman Chris Carlin is the current Buccaneer leader finishing the first two rounds tied for fourth out of 75 individuals firing a two-round one-under-par score of 143 (72-71). Carlos Velez (E) is just one stroke back in seventh place with a two-round score of 144, while Victor Billskoog (+5) finished the first two rounds T19 with a 149 (74-75) score. Guillermo Pumarol (72-79=151) is currently T27, while Preston Roberts (81-74=155) finished the first day T46 to round out the top five.
 
Nova Southeastern’s Greg O’Mahony (-3) and Valdosta State’s Brent Witcher (-3) are currently the tournament individual leaders with 141 two-round scores.
 
The tournament will conclude with an 8:30 am tee off on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
