MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers used a stifling defense to upset the 16th-ranked Stonehill Skyhawks 52-49 in women’s basketball action from the Cruzin Classic in the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers held the Skyhawks to just 49 points, their lowest output of the season and 23 points below their season average. Stonehill shot just 33.3 percent for the game, including just three for 14 from three-point range.
Kia Palmer came off the bench to score 15 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead the Bucs (9-1) over the Skyhawks (9-2). Princess Bailey added 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kelsey Simonds led Stonehill with 20 points.
The Bucs trailed 37-36 with 6:25 remaining, but Palmer converted a pair of free throws to give them a 38-37 lead and they never trailed again. The Bucs hit four of six free throws in the final two minutes to secure the win.
The Bucs will host the Barry Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29, taking on 21st-ranked Shaw on Friday and perennial power Bentley on Saturday. Both games are at 6:0 pm.
