LA JOLLA, Cal. – Concluding their four-game series against the #14 Tritons of University of California San Diego, the Barry University baseball team (6-5) fell 5-3 on Sunday at Triton Baseball Field.
With the game tied at three heading into the bottom of the eighth, San Diego (10-3) scored the go-ahead run on an RBI double down third base by Chris Franco. A RBI single by Evan Kehoe gave the Tritons an insurance run 5-3.
Barry struck first in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. After stealing second and third base, Andrew Frezza was driven home by John Servidio’s RBI single through the right gap to give Barry an early 1-0. Following Carlos Gomez’s double down the left field line to advance the runners, Joel Keefe’s two-RBI double down the right line extended the lead 3-0.
The Tritons bounced back in the sixth inning when Matt Cantele’s RBI double to the wall scored Vance Albitz from second to cut the lead 3-1. UCSD then scored on a wild pitch followed by a single to even the game at three apiece.
Keefe paced the Buccaneers with two hits and two RBI while four other players recorded a hit. Tim Mort of UCSD led the Tritons with two hits.
Mike Tomoleoni pitched six innings for Barry giving up three runs on four hits while striking out three. Brian Mastin (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bucs while Matt Rossman (2-0) picked up the win for the Tritons.
The Buccaneers return to Florida and will have four days off before taking on the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic in the first of a three-game series on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 pm.
