AUSTIN, Texas—The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers (13-3) won a tightly contested 7-2 decision over the #22-ranked St. Edward’s (5-9) at the Br. Emmett Strohmeyer Courts on Thursday.
The Bucs took a 2-1 advantage in doubles. Top pair Patrick Rittenauer and Ales Svigelj edged Brett Powers and Jacob Walley in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5). The Hilltoppers took the second doubles in a match nearly as close with Nick Arnold and Mick Walter squeaking by Andrew Sharnov and Roman Werschel 9-7. Emmanuel Fraitzl and Jakub Fejfar gave the Bucs the edge with an 8-6 win over Justin Raiti and Boris Barrios at number three.
Fraitzl made it 3-1 Barry with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Barrios at number three singles. But Bernard Lancaster narrowed the lead to 3-2 with an upset of 43rd-ranked Sharnov 6-1, 6-4 at number five.
Werschel, ranked 49th, put the Bucs on the edge with a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win at number four over Walley.
The final three matches all went to third sets, with the Bucs taking them all. Twelth-ranked Rittenauer handled Raiti 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3 at the top flight to clinch the match. Svigelj made it 6-2 with a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Powers at number two.
Manuel Lauter completed the match with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win over Walter at number six.
The Bucs continue their Texas swing with a match at Incarnate Word on Friday.
