FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball team (3-1) closed out the second day of the NSU Shark Classic at the University Center by splitting a pair of matches. The Buccaneers defeated the Alderson Broaddus Battlers (0-3) in three sets 25-13, 25-19, 25-19 to start the day, but closed out tournament play with a five set loss to the California (Pa.) Vulcans (4-0) 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 20-25, 11-15.

After securing a pair of wins on the first day of the Classic, the Buccaneers carried the season-opening momentum into day two of the tournament downing the Battlers in the first set 25-13. Barry continued to dominate the opposition closing out match point in the third set on a Lauren Evans service ace for the win.

Julia Ridley led Buccaneers with a team-high 11 kills and hit a blazing .348 clip. Camilla Pagnan followed with her second double-double in three matches finishing with 10 kills and a season-high 17 digs to lead the team. Lauren Evans and Julie Priester added 11 digs, while freshman Libby Walter posted her second career double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.

Sarah Neikirk led the Battlers with eight kills, while Jamilyn Decorte finished with 22 assists and 15 digs. Amanda Check finished with 10 digs for Alderson Broaddus.

In the nightcap, the Bucs carried a highly touted Vulcan team to five sets before dropping their first match of the year. Barry jumped out and grabbed the first set 25-20, but faltered in the second losing 25-16 to even the match at one set apiece. A 25-21 win the third gave the Bucs a 2-1 set advantage. With the score tied at 20-20 in the fourth set, Julie Paronish served out the final four points for the Vulcans to send the match into a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, Cal (Pa.) jumped out to a convincing 8-1 lead, but after switching sides Barry began to cut into the deficit and came to within three 14-11. However, the late rally was too little too late as Bridget Bielich secured the win for California.

Pagnan led the Buccaneers with 21 kills and hit a .315 clip, while Ridley followed with a career-high 18 kills. Walter recorded her third double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs, while Evans added another 25-dig performance to her resume. Priester posted her second consecutive match with 10 or more digs.

A 2007 All-American, Joanna Nist led the Vulcans with 20 kills and added 11 digs, while Ludmila Amaral and Thais Franca followed with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Setter Silva Renata added a double-double with 49 assists and 13 digs, while Marta Hodge led the team with 15 digs.
