VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Barry University men’s basketball built an early lead against Valdosta State, but the Blazers began to turn up the intensity, as they outscored the Bucs by 13 in the second half to win going away, 57-40, Saturday night.

Behind another strong defensive effort, Barry (3-2) forced Valdosta State into several tough shots early in the first half, which allowed the Bucs to take break out to a six-point lead at the 9:45 mark on a Willie Whitfield steal and layup.

Barry continued to answer the Blazers (8-1) shot for shot over the next two minutes, as Jamaal Madyun helped build the lead back to six on a three-pointer with seven minutes to play in the first frame.

Three-pointers helped bring VSU back over the final seven minutes in the half, as Ricardo Lewis hit a pair and Tyrone Curnell added another one near the three minute mark to put the Blazers ahead for good.

The Bucs opened the second half strong on a layup by Chad Bishop, but VSU took control at the 10:13 mark, rolling off 12 straight points before an Erick Nsangou layup five minutes later stopped the run.

Madyun provided a strong boost off the bench, as he tallied seven points and four rebounds in 17 minutes.

Bryan Chiverton led the team in points with nine and also shot the best from the floor, going 4-for-7, including a three-pointer.

The Bucs will stay on the road as they will travel to Memphis, Tenn. for a pair of games, beginning Saturday against Christian Brothers with tipoff set for 3 p.m. Central time.
