BOCA RATON, Fla. – The top-ranked Barry Buccaneers dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to the third-ranked Lynn Fighting Knights at the McCusker Sports Complex on Wednesday.
A close hard-fought match from the beginning, Lynn (12-0, 4-0 SSC) took an early 2-1 lead in doubles play. Alessandro Sarra and Luca Pavanelli defeated Ales Svigelj and Andrew Sharnov 8-5 in the second position while Alex Voirin and Tomas Racak beat Roman Werschel and Sergio Velez by the same score in the third slot.
Emanuel Fraitzl and Max Wimmer continued their stellar play at number one doubles, beating the Knights’ combo of Julien Carsuzaa and Miloslav Navratil 8-4 at number one.
In singles, the Knights picked up their first point as fifth-ranked Carsuzaa took down his rival, fourth-ranked Svigelj, 6-2, 6-3 in the top flight. Alex Voirin added the second point for the Blue and White to go up 4-1, beating Velez 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the sixth position.
Racak sealed the win for the Knights with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Fraitzl at number two singles.
With the match no longer in question, the Bucs collected their remaining points, all in three sets. Wimmer outlasted Sarra 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 followed by Werschel closing out a valiant comeback attempt from Pavanelli 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Barry's final point came in a super tie-breaker as 25th-ranked Sharnov edged Navratil 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (12-10).
The Bucs host a now-crucial test on Saturday, Mar. 28 as they take on the Rollins Tars at the Buccaneer Tennis Center at 10:00 am.
