Baseball Homers Way Back To Drop Spartans

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After Tampa jumped out to a four-run advantage, the Bucs began to chip away.

Chip away Barry did, as the Barry University baseball team tallied seven of the next eight runs to defeat Tampa, 7-5, Friday night in Sunshine State Conference play.

Tampa (36-13, 13-6 SSC) opened up the game with an RBI single to break open the scoring.
An RBI double, RBI single and a fielder’s choice plated three more runs for the Spartans in the fourth to expand to a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Barry (39-6, 16-3 SSC) then began to find their hits, as Yas Guiterrez homered down the left field line for a two-run shot scoring Yan Gomes and cutting the lead in half.

The following inning went pretty much the same, as with two on, Mitch Rodriguez smoked a three-run shot and put the Bucs ahead 5-3.

For good measure, Nick Shaw added a two-run double down the right field line to give the Bucs all the run support they would need.

Brad McAllister (9-0) muscled through five innings to record the win, as Josh Holmes, Scott Sexton and Bobby Hernandez helped close the door.

Holmes pitched a solid 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run, while striking out three.

Shaw, Rodriguez, Gomes and Gutierrez all tallied two hits apiece to lead the way offensively.

The win also helped the Bucs eclipse their old school mark for wins breaking the 38 win effort set back in 1998.

Barry will continue their three-game series with Tampa with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.

Saturday’s games will also mark senior day for the seven Barry seniors.
