MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers exploded for four goals to beat the Florida Memorial Lionettes 4-0 Wednesday night at Buccaneer Field.

Melissa Madrid notched her first career hat-trick, including the game winner in the sixth minute. Silvia Lugo added a goal, while Lainie Ferring had two assists and Joanna Stewart and Brianni Lorenzo each had one.

Madrid got the ball rolling for the Bucs (1-1-0) in the sixth minute. Ferring, taking one of the Bucs’ 11 corners found Madrid at the top of the box and she drilled the ball into the right corner of the goal.

The Bucs led 1-0 at the break, but could have had a bigger lead. They hit the crossbar twice and the left post once, outshooting the Lionettes (1-1-0) 26-2.

“It would have been easy for us to sit back and take this game easy after out-shooting them by so much in the first half,” Barry head coach Fred Jungemann said. “But the girls came back and played hard in the second half and got a nice reward for their effort.”

In the second half, the Bucs finally broke down the Lionette defense.  Lugo took a feed up the middle from Lorenzo and broke away from the defense to one on one with FMU keeper Esprit Boyd, slotting the ball into the lower left corner.

Madrid scored twice in 1:38 late in the game. At 83:04, she hooked up again with Ferring, making a great turn and rip from just inside the 18-yard box. Before she could be taken out of the game, however, she took a feed from Stewart and blasted home her third goal at the 84:42 mark.

Emily Brunschweiler earned her first win and shutout in goal for the Bucs, making one save. Boyd took the loss for FMU, despite making 13 saves.

The Bucs host the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7:00 pm to open Sunshine State Conference play.
